Mosque at Lucknow

by Henry Salt (1780-1827)
Pub. London

original hand-coloured aquatint

The Grand Mosque of the Bada Imambara complex in Lucknow, built in the eighteenth century, is a stunning brick structure covered with a brilliant chunam finish that gleams brightly in the sunlight. Surrounding the mosque, there are other attractions like a palace, the Imambara with a deep well, three ornate gateways, and a central Asiatic garden divided into neat beds by stone walkways.

Henry Salt, an artist, traveller, diplomat, and antiquities collector, was born in Lichfield, Staffordshire, England, on June 14, 1780. After studying drawing under Glover and training with Joseph Farington and John Hoppner, he embarked on a transformative eastern tour with George, viscount Valentia, producing numerous drawings used in Lord Valentia’s Voyages and Travels to India, published in 1809.  Salt’s own drawings were later featured in a publication titled Twenty-four Views in St. Helena, the Cape, India, Ceylon, the Red Sea, Abyssinia, and Egypt, showcasing his artistry and expertise alongside hand-coloured aquatints by D. Havell and J. Bluck.
