This graceful pair of padukas, or toe-knob sandals, cast in brass, is decorated with large petal motifs towards the rounded heel and the toe-knob. They are of simple design, prioritizing their function and in keeping with the Holy man aesthetic. The edge of the sole is decorated with a fine double border, and the prominent toe holders are adorned with geometric patterns. The pair is in fine condition, with obvious signs of age and use.

Padukas, also known as the kharawan are traditional open sandals which comprise of a flat base and a knob at the front, held between the big and second toe. They are made from a variety of materials including precious woods, ivory, silver and brass. They are made in a variety of shapes including the fish, hourglass and foot shaped. Such toe-knob sandals are usually associated with the Indian sadhu (ascetic), who usually wander from village to village. These sandals represent footwear in its most basic form, which is in keeping with the life, beliefs, and traditions of the ascetics who wear them. Padukas made from luxurious, precious metals serve other purposes, such as ornaments in a bride’s trousseau, ritual objects of veneration for a devotee, and votive offerings from the faithful.
