Pair of Winged Angels

Pair of Winged Angels

Goa

Wood, polychromed

An attractive pair of finely carved and polychromed winged angels. They display markedly European influenced clothes and curled hair locks. These figure would have formed part of the upper corners of an altar.

Elaborately carved wooden altars formed the ritual and visual focus of the interiors of churches. Hired by the bishops and priests, Southern Indian woodworkers skillfully crafted complex figures for altars, showcasing their imagination by mixing European with Indian imagery and design conventions. These figures showcased their artists prowess with charming poses and expressive features, with figures often coloured in vibrant colours using hard wax and highlighted with gold. Angels and other attendant figures were often grouped on tops of columns and cornices, and around the capping pediment in altars. Some were shown with prominent wings, holding garlands or palm fronds in their hands, or raising one arm up to gesture towards a central figure. Sometimes dressed in richly flowing garments while others are naked or with a simple cloth draped over the body.

Individual Sizes (cms): 46(H) x 21.5(W) x 19(D) each
