Pichhwai for Varsha (Rainy Season)

Pichhwai for Varsha (Rainy Season)

Nathdwara (Rajasthan)

Cotton, painted on pigments

Under a dark, storm-laden sky that veils the full moon, four graceful maidens approach Krishna hand in hand, their expressions calm and serene. They move toward a pair of lush banana trees that frame the empty central space where the deity would once have stood. A horizontal divide marks a shift in setting; below it, four gopis frolic along the lotus-laden banks of the Yamuna River. A delicate floral border encloses the scene.

Such painted textiles were not just decorative, but intended to be displayed in ritual settings, accompanied by real offerings—flowers, sweets, spices, even miniature carts or boats—placed before them and venerated by priests and devotees.

The relationship between Krishna and his devotees is unique: the bhakta’s unqualified devotion is the path to enjoying the Lord’s eternal pushti, grace. As the metaphor of Krishna’s multiple manifestation suggests, the swarupa of the One Supreme Divine Being, becomes different things for different people — a fellow prankster, a lover, an adorable child.
