Vase

Bombay (Maharashtra)

silver

Makers Marks for ‘Tarachand Parsram Bombay

A fine vase on a square base decorated with an upper band of wild animals including elephants, lions, tigers, deer, bears etc.  among trees in a jungle landscape. Some being pursued by hunters carrying bows, daggers etc. A lower border comprising of acanthus leaves and a circular floral wreath border on the base.

Bombay silversmiths developed a range of hybrid silverware by combining distinctive regional styles. For instance Bombay developed a Cutch-Lucknow style that combined typical Cutch scrollwork with hunting friezes; a Cutch-Calcutta style that combined scrollwork with rural scenes and a local swami style which was so close to the Madras work that it is only the name of a Bombay retailer stamped on the base that helps identify the piece as manufactured in Bombay. While the city’s own contribution to silverware has been played down, the introduction of urban scenes may certainly be attributed to the imagination of Bombay silversmiths.
